How Recruitment Works
Recruitment is the process by which one joins a fraternity or sorority. Any fraternity or sorority organization in good standing may participate in the recruitment process in the Spring semester. Recruitment provides potential new members (PNMs) an opportunity to learn more about the various organizations at UC Merced. PNMs are encouraged to ask questions, get to know current members and alumni, and to find the organization that is the best fit for them.
The organizations who are participating in recruitment will host events throughout the week they are assigned to. It is NOT required to attend every single event they are hosting, but we encourage you to attend as many events as you can! We hope that you'll be open minded in this process and find your home away from home! Look over the fraternity and sorority life website for more information about each organization.
How to Join an NPHC Organization (How Membership Intake works)
Membership intake is the membership selection process conducted by the historically Black Organizations, which are governed by the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Membership intake for the organizations of the National Pan-Hellenic Council may vary differently between each of the Divine Nine organization.
When NPHC organizations are looking to conduct membership intake, many of them will host an informational meeting in which the criteria for membership is explained. Membership intake is in coordination with the specific chapter and their national organization.
The informational meetings will be announced through flyers, social media posts, and campus advertising [one to two weeks] before the session. Any students interested are encouraged to review the organization's national website before attending information sessions.
Students interested in learning more about Divine Nine Fraternities and Sororities are encouraged to research the history of each organization, visit their National website, and learn of their respective membership requirements.
- FSL strongly recommends looking at Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. national website to learn more about their specific joining requirements!
5 Things You Can Do to Show Interest in an NPHC Chapter
1. Attend chapter programs and events.
2. Attend an Interest Meeting or Informational for that chapter.
3. Get to know the members of the organization.
4. Research information on the internet about the group you are interested in.
5. Show your own involvement on campus (i.e. get involved in clubs, community service, etc.)

How to Join a Panhellenic Organization
Panhellenic Sorority "Continuous Open Bidding",
what is that? Continuous Open Bidding (COB) is the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) informal recruitment.
At UC Merced, COB takes place in the fall semester.
Formal recruitment is conducted in the Spring semester. Panhellenic Sororities may only participate in Fall/Spring COB Recruitment if they are below campus total.
The chapters that do participate in COB are only allowed to get a select amount of women based on what their current total of chapter members is!
This year, the following chapters will be participating in FORMAL RECRUITMENT: Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Phi Mu.
Formal recruitment is a 3 day period that gives PNMs a chance to visit all 4 chapters!

Fees Associated with Membership
Membership in a fraternity or sorority does have a fee associated with it. These fees are called "dues." Dues range between organizations, and they fund the activities and costs associated with operating the chapter. Some examples of where the dues money goes include: membership badge/pin, insurance costs, social events, community service programs, etc.
It is a good idea to talk to members of each organization to determine if membership is affordable for you. Many students hold part time jobs to help cover their fees. Scholarships and payment plans are also available to members.
